JACKSONVILLE CHAPTER

Organized February 14, 1896 Jacksonville Florida

Jacksonville Chapter DAR organized in 1896, is the oldest Chapter in Florida. It has accomplished all the activities that are assigned by the NSDAR, lead by each Regent for the past ten years. The Jacksonville Chapter sponsors the Princess Melee Chapter C.A.R.

The work done by the Jacksonville Chapter since 1958 begins under the leadership of Mrs. John W. Boyd and continues with the present Regent, Mrs. William O. Kerns, whose term of office ends in 1968.

Much has been done by the Chapter which makes each one proud of her membership and even more proud of her heritage. The Chapter has attained either the Gold or Silver Honor Roll every year, which shows that each of the Regents puts forth her very best effort during her term of office, however, one must not overlook the fact that a Regents performs her duties only when she has the full cooperation of her Board.

Good Citizens Pins and Certificates have been awarded; Good Citizenship Medals and Certificates; History Medals and Certificates; large Auditorium United States Flags have been given to schools, small ones given to newly Naturalized Citizens along with copies of the "Bill of Rights", also Historical Booklets "Presidents of United States" have been given. A DAR Banner was presented to District I. Copies of National Defense material have been distributed.

Some of the outstanding events which have occurred in this ten years period in the Jacksonville Chapter have been the presentation of a Certificate which was given to an American History Teacher for her outstanding work in promoting Patriotic ideals. Announcement trailers in theaters, spot announcements in schools, special Religious Services in Churches; window display of the Revolutionary Period Costumes in a large department store; posters in stores. Purchased eleven "Citizen U.S.A." tape recordings for use in the teaching of American History in the Duval County Schools. Ten copies of "In Washington, The DAR Story" were presented to fifth and sixth grade teachers of an elementary school. The Jacksonville Chapter cooperated with the Ribault Quadricentennial Celebration which presented the dramatic production of Kermit Hunter entitled "Next Day In the Morning". The Jacksonville Chapter enthusiastically entered two outstanding members in National Contests and both entries won second place in the State, Mrs. John T. Potts as "Outstanding Miss of Mrs. Junior DAR and Mrs. Carrington Barrs as "The Mother of the Year". At one of the Continental Congresses the Junior Membership Committee of the Jacksonville Chapter presented to its National Chairman a beautiful doll and a beautiful wardrobe. The Jacksonville Chapter was "FIRST" in State for Junior Membership increase, new subscriptions DAR Magazine, transfers from C.A.R. to DAR, and one of three Chapters in State receiving the President General's Special Award, winning this award twice. Programs have fulfilled the requirements of the National Society, emphasizing American Heritage. The 75th Anniversary was featured in various ways and the Chapter received a Certificate for the best program on the Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Celebration. Also, as an extra activity, the Jacksonville Chapter entertained the patients at the Naval Air Station at a Bingo party, an observance of Veterans Day (after participating in the parade through the city). Jacksonville Chapter has made a good annual report on Publicity, especially with number of inches in the local newspapers. The Chapter has always been well represented at District, State and National Meetings, having been hostess to the Florida State Conference in 1964 and the Florida State Board of Management meeting in 1961.

Last, but not least, the Jacksonville Chapter is proud of its members who have served and are serving on State and National Committees and as State Officers. They are Mrs. John W. Boyd, State Historian; Mrs. Harold R. Frankenberg as State Corresponding Secretary, Second Vice Regent and also as National Vice Chairman of Marshall Committees; Mrs. Homer T. Jones as State Chairman of DAR. Schools and " Secretary of District 1; Mrs. William O'Rear Kerns as Director-Elect of District 1.

MRS. JOHN WRIGHT BOYD (1957-59)

Christine Lassetter Boyd is a Georgian by birth, and is descended from Yancy Holman. The daughter of David Lewis Lassetter and Jessie Albright Lassetter of Luthersville, Georgia, she attended Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida and was graduated from John Marshall University, Atlanta, with an LLB Degree. She is an active member of the Iota Tau Tau International Legal Sorority. She is a past president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church and is honored with a life membership in this society. She is a past Florida State and Jacksonville president of the Blue Goose Insurance Organization. Mrs. Boyd is a past president of the River Oaks Circle of the Jacksonville Garden Club and is an honorary life member of this club. She has worked in P.T.A. and in all phases of community work and drives and has received several citations for this service. She is married to John Wright Boyd, a member of Jacksonville Chapter, S.A.R., who has published a family history "Wright-Lewis-Moore and Connected Families". Her children are John W. Boyd, Jr., Constance Christine Boyd and David Emory Boyd. Constance Boyd is a member of Jacksonville Chapter under the leadership of Mrs. Boyd met all requirements for the Gold Honor Roll and gave generously to all the State and National funds. Two $50.00 scholarships were given to the Seminole Indians and magazine subscriptions and Christmas gifts were sent to the Veteran's Hospital in Lake City, Florida.

After completing her regime as Regent of Jacksonville Chapter Mrs. Boyd was elected State Historian for 1960-1962. This was another great opportunity to serve the Florida Daughters and was a rewarding experience. Mrs. Boyd also served the Jacksonville Chapter as Recording Secretary.

MRS. CARRINGTON ETHEDDRED BARRS (1959-61)Daughters of the American Revolution Jacksonville, Florida 1958-1968

Kate Beaman Barrs was born in Clinton, N.C., daughter of John A. and Elizabeth Herring Beaman. She is a graduate of Merideth College, Raleigh, N.C. in the class of 1906. Mrs. Barrs came to Jacksonville as a bride in 1907 and immediately became active in Civic affairs. She is the Mother of Dena Barrs Wood (Mrs. James), Kathryn Barrs Lewis (Mrs. Yale) and Carrington Barrs. Mrs. Barrs is Grandmother of ten; Gail Wood George, James Wood, Jr., Yale Lewis, Jr., Barrs Lewis, Betta Barrs Arthur, (member of Jacksonville Chapter, DAR), Carrington Barrs III, Frederick Barrs, Scott Barrs, Bruce Beaman Barrs and Catherine Elizabeth Barrs and Great-Grandmother of three.

Mrs. Barrs became active in DAR in the early 1950s and served the Jacksonville Chapter as Secretary, First Vice-Regent and Regent. As Regent, one of her outstanding projects was the beginning of a city-wide observance of American History Month.

Mrs. Barrs is a wonderful, cultured, refined, religious woman. She is a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Rose Garden Circle, Friday Musicale, Jacksonville Womans Club, Women's Guild of Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Cummer Gallery of Art, Children's Museum and Y.W.C.A. Mrs. Barrs and a group of interested women organized the first Mother's Club in Jacksonville which later became the P.T.A. Mrs. Barrs has continued her interest in DAR and is always present at State and National Conferences.

MRS. HAROLD ROBB FRANKENBERG

Helen Headlee Frankenberg, daughter of Wilbur Headlee and Ella Evans Headlee, was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Charleston, West Virginia at an early age. She was a member of the West Virginia Society Children of the American Revolution before joining the Daughters of the American Revolution, accepted by the National Board of Management April 12, 1930. Mrs. Frankenberg and her mother, Mrs. Headlee were Charter Members of the Kanawha Valley Chapter in Charleston, W. Va.

Mrs. Frankenberg was educated in the public schools of Charleston, Doane Academy and Denison University at Granville Ohio. In 1929 she was married to Harold Robb Frankenberg. They lived in Columbus Ohio until 1947 when they moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Their two daughters, Anne Avery Frankenberg who married Commander Ernest Olmstead Saltmarsh and Jane Alden Frankenberg married to James William Taylor, became members of the Jacksonville Chapter, DAR. Anne and Ernest Saltmarsh are the parents of seven children namely; Christopher William, Sara Elizabeth, Ernest Olmstead III, Mary Evans, Michael Francis, Suzanne, and Faith Anne. Jane and James Taylor have three children, David Robb, Russell William and Cynthia Louise.

Since the publication of Volume III of the History of the Florida State Society DAR, Mrs. Frankenberg has held the following offices:

1958-1960 State Chairman of Membership Committee. 1959-1961 Vice Regent and Program Chairman of Jacksonville Chapter. 1961-1963 Regent, Jacksonville Chapter. 1962-1964 State Chairman of Student Loan and Scholarship Committee. 1963-1966 Chapter By-Laws, Resolutions and Finance Committees. 1964-1966 State Society Corresponding Secretary. 1966-1968 State Society Second Vice Regent, serving as District Advisor. 1966-1968 Chapter Parliamentarian and Chairman of Chapter Scrap-book Committee. 1958-1968 National Vice Chairman of Marshall Committee for Continental Congress.

In the spring of 1962 the Regent was notified the historical marker erected by the Jacksonville Chapter in 1936 on Fort George Island, near the entrance to the Kingsley Plantation, had been damaged and was laying on the ground by State Road A1A. The marker commemorates the first Protestant Prayer offered in North America. The prayer was given when Jean Ribault and a party of Huguenots landed on the northern banks of the St. Johns River May 1, 1562. They knelt beseeching God's guidance, and commended the natives to His care.

With the cooperation of County Commissioners the Chapter had the marker restored, and it was rededicated May 14, 1962 with a reverent ceremony. It was of special significance that the restoration took place at the time the Chapter was participating in the Ribault Quadri-Centennial Celebration.

In addition to the civic, cultural and patriotic organizations printed in Volume III of the History of the Florida State Society when Mrs. Frankenberg was State Historian, she has since been active in other organizations such as: the Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonville Symphony Association, the Jacksonville Council of the Arts, the Jacksonville Committee of the St. Augustine Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission, the Mandarin Community Club, and has represented the Amaryllis Garden Circle of the Garden Club of Jacksonville on the Horticulture, Grounds and Landscape Design Committees. Having transferred church membership to the Mandarin Presbyterian Church she attends the Bible Study Class, and is affiliated with the Women of the Church. For the past five years she has been the Alumnae Hause and Property Manager for the Epsilon Zeta Sorority house of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity at Florida State University. This year she was reinstated as a member-at-large in the National Society, Daughters of the American Colonists.

MRS. HOMER TILFORD JONES (1963-66)

Mabel Haley Glass Jones served the Jacksonville Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in various offices before she was elected as Regent. She served as Recording Secretary, Registrar, Second Vice-Regent and First Vice-Regent. Currently, she is State Chairman, DAR School Committee.

While Regent of the Jacksonville Chapter, Mrs. Jones had the honor and pleasure receiving the President-General's Award twice, which is the highest award a Chapter can receive. She was presented these awards by the President-General on the stage at Continental Congress.

Mrs. Jones' Revolutionary ancestors include Lt. Joshua Haley of Massachusetts; and Elihu Hibbard, a New Englander who was one of the first settlers of Camden County, Georgia, and a descendant of Robert Hibbard, a Founder of Salem, Massachusetts.

Her Colonial ancestry is traced to prominent seventeenth century families including Hibbard, Malsby, Haley, Child, Wingate, South-wick, Dwight, Hilton, Hill, Bond, Mofris, Partridge, March, Crockett, Hodsdon, Snell, Burnap, Crow, Clements, Nutter, Goodwin.

Mrs. Jones is a member of the United States Daughters of Eighteen Twelve, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of Colonial Wars, Old Plymouth Colony Descendantes, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, Magna Charta Dames and The Sovereign Colonial Society Americans of Royal Descent. Currently she is State President, Florida Society, Daughters of 1812. She has taken an active part in the civic, cultural, social and religious life of her community for many years.

Mrs. Jones has devoted substantial time over a period of many years to genealogical research relating to her own family lines; has assisted applicants for membership in various patriotic organizations; and has been instrumental in establishing for other applicants Revolutionary ancestors not previously claimed. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society and other genealogical and historical organizations.

Mrs. Jones is a native of Georgia, the daughter of John David and Elizabeth (Hibbard) Glass. Her husband is a practising attorney. They have two children: Homer Tilford Jones, Jr., a law student at Emory University; a daughter, Marjorie Frances Jones (Mrs. John Thomas Potts, Jr.); and three grandchildren, Anne Dwight Potts, John Cairy Potts and Thomas Wyatt Potts. Each is a member of the Daughters of the America Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution or Children of the America Revolution.
