CLUB FLOWER (ON COVER) GORDONIA LASIANTHUS (Loblolly Bay)The Gordonia belongs

to the Theceae or Camellia Family and is closely related to the beautiful lost Franklin Altamaha.

It was named for James Gordon, an English nurseryman, who died in 1870.The range of the

Gordonia is narrow, being found along the coastal plain from North Carolina to about the

latitude of Lake Okeechobee in Florida. It grows in abundance in Swamps and lowlands of

Duval County, Florida. In this region the trees reach a height of sixty feet. It is perfectly hardy,

easily transplanted and will flourish under ordinary care in almost any garden within its range.

The blooming period is long, from the middle of April through October.

The white flowers are large, fragrant and of a lovely magnolia-like texture

with quantities of bright yellow stamens in the centers.
